Paros island on Google Maps.
The island of Paros, one of the twenty-four large islands that make up the Cyclades archipelago, is known for its ancient white marble mines. Just a few miles by boat from the island of Naxos, Paros has a sister island, Antiparos, and the two form an administrative unit with the capital, Parikia. Parikia is a small town of whitewashed houses crisscrossed by narrow stone-paved streets and alleys that wind around the ancient Kastro, the castle whose walls were built using ancient marble blocks that were once part of columns and structures of Greek and Roman temples. Today, Parikia is a quiet tourist town with dozens of shops selling artisanal crafts and local products, bars, and restaurants where you can enjoy fresh fish caught by local fishermen who leave the port at sunset to spend the night at sea and sell their catch on the pier, where residents and restaurant owners gather. Paros is a place to spend a peaceful holiday on one of its many beaches and to visit the villages that perch on the slopes of the mountains that characterize the island.
